Hello third grade families,
I hope everyone is staying healthy and safe. Here is the plan for homework for the extended spring break: Math: Lessons #90-93. Please go over each lesson in the textbook and have them complete the lesson practice before beginning each lesson's homework in the homework book. Lesson #90 Multiplying Two 2-Digit Numbers Lesson #91 Decimal Place Value Lesson #92 Classifying Quadrilaterals Lesson #93 Estimating Multiplication and Division Answers I will send videos answer keys starting on Monday so you can check the homework together. History and Reading: I have assigned each student 5 reading passages related to our History unit in Readworks (go to readworks.org). Students can sign in using their Google sign-in. Most students have their login memorized by now, but if they need help, please let me know. One of the passages has a question set to complete and the others have vocabulary questions to answer. Our (in class) History projects are also on Google Slides. Your child may work on their project (it is a partner project), add in research and pictures if they would like. These projects are now due on April 2nd. Please have your child continue to read 30 minutes per day! Riggs: I will post the new Riggs words with a video to watch starting on Monday. Students should watch the video and copy the words into their Riggs notebook. Then complete the Riggs homework for that day. Here are some great online resources as well: Prodigy (play.prodigygame.com) -Each student already has a login eSpark (espark.app) -Each student already has a login. I have created assignments on here for extra practice in reading and Math Khan Academy-(https://www.khanacademy.org/) Math videos and lessons. We don't currently have logins, but you can create a free account. If you have any questions, please let me know. This is a developing situation, so things can change very quickly! Thanks, Miss Devlin

It's feeling like Spring weather out there already! Here are some more updates for our classroom:
BOB Battles: Our class has completed two BOB Battles (vs. 4th grade and vs. 5th grade). We have three more battles to go! You are welcome to watch. Tomorrow at 2:15 we will be battling 7th grade. On Monday (3/2) at 11:00, we will battle 8th grade. And on March 3rd at 3:10 we will battle 6th grade. Our first battle we got 35 points and today we got 24. Thanks to everyone for supporting your child in reading the BOB books at home! Family Reading Night: The sign-ups have gone out for Family Reading Night. If you haven't had a chance to sign up yet, here it is! https://www.signupgenius.com/go/60b0d4fa5af23a20-family3 Don't forget to sign up for two sessions. One at 6:30 and one at 7. We will have a student vs. teacher BOB Battle (just for fun) after both sessions! Weather Test: We have our next Science test this Thursday. Students were instructed to bring their Science notebooks home to study. Tomorrow, in lieu of Riggs homework, students will have a study guide crossword to complete with vocabulary to review from the unit. New History Unit and Presentations: Next week, we will begin a new Core Knowledge unit on American History: 13 Colonies and Explorers. Students will be researching the colonies and creating a research project presentation with a partner. Presentations will take place on Wednesday, March 18th from 2:30-3:15. This project is created at school, so there will be no extra work at home this time! You are welcome to join us for the presentations! PTA Auction Basket: A flyer went out yesterday about our PTA Basket. Our theme is Family Movie Night. So you can think of either a night in with a DVD, or a night out to the movies. Anything movie-themed is welcome! Please drop off your donation in our classroom or the office. Thanks! Portfolios: Students will be bringing their portfolios home tomorrow so that families can see their latest Math test scores. Their latest Orthography score will be in there as well. Please discuss with your child challenges and successes you are seeing. At this point in the year, if they are not scoring 15/20 or higher on their written Math tests, they need to be working extra hard on the problems they are missing to catch up. If you have any questions, please let me know. Field Trip Chaperones: Help! We need at least 2 more chaperones to go on our March 13th field trip to the Dibble House. This is a fun trip where students get hands-on experience with colonial and settlement-era activities. If you are able to attend, please sign up ASAP! We will be back by 1:30 if that helps anyone be able to attend. Thanks! Upcoming Events: All School Assembly: February 27th at 8am Family Reading Night: March 5th at 6:30 Field Trip Friday: March 13th (Dibble House in Molalla) 13 Colonies Presentations: March 18th at 2:30 Spring Break: March 23rd-27th Hello third grade families,
We have lots of exciting activities in the next couple months! First of all, I wanted to thank everyone for making time for student-led conferences. I think it is a great time to check in on progress and make goals for the rest of the year! Valentine's Day: This year, Valentine's Day lands on a Friday! So we will celebrate on Thursday, February 13th. Please make sure if your child is bringing a valentine, that they have one for each student. Handmade cards/gifts are encouraged. Also, please no candy! We will plan to hand them out at the end of the day on Thursday. This is completely optional! Family Reading Night: On March 5th, we have Family Reading Night. This is a time for families to come together and celebrate the joy of reading! During the day, students can wear a costume/outfit of a favorite book character. That evening, each teacher will be reading a book and have a craft or activity to go along with it. There are two sessions. One at 6:30 and one at 7:00, so your child can pick two different sessions to attend with an adult accompanying them. We hope you can make it! Field Trip Chaperones: We have some great trips planned for the upcoming months. Unfortunately, we currently do not have enough chaperones to make the trips possible. If you or another family member is available to join us for a trip, please sign up! New Core Knowledge Unit: This month we are studying weather and climate. This is a new Science unit for third grade that was previously taught in fourth grade. If you or someone you know would like to come in as a guest speaker about weather, please let me know! Health: We will have Health once a week starting next week. We will be using The Great Body Shop curriculum that touches on the Oregon health standards. You can view the topics at this link: https://www.thegreatbodyshop.net/curriculum/k-six/topics and click on 3rd grade. We have already learned some of it during the Human Body unit earlier this year. If you have any questions, please let me know. Upcoming Events: Field Trip Friday: February 21st (SCRAP and Trackers) President's Day (No School) February 17th All School Assembly: February 27th at 8am Family Reading Night: March 5th at 6:30 Field Trip Friday: March 13th (Dibble House in Molalla) Spring Break: March 23rd-27th Hello third grade families,
I hope you all had a fantastic Winter Break. We have less than one month until student-led conferences and we also have many other upcoming events and projects! Here's the latest: Math Teacher: As you have heard, I am now teaching Intermediate 4 Math (in the third grade room). Mrs. LeGrand is teaching Saxon Math 3 in her room, and our new 1st grade teacher, Mrs. Nickelby is teaching Saxon Math 2 in her room. This is to help with the transition of our new teacher and to aide in communication with parents. I taught Intermediate 4 the previous two years and can answer any questions either via e-mail, or during conferences. Native American Projects: Your child will be bringing home a packet today explaining their Native American projects, which are due on January 30th. If your child would prefer to take a test instead, that is also an option. There are a variety of project options. Please go over the handout with your child and make a decision by next Monday, January 13th. Your child can change their mind after that date, but please turn in the small portion on their packet that says return by the 13th. Battle of the Books: The Battle of the Books ("BOB") will begin next week and run for 6 weeks. We have an assembly this Thursday at 8am to Kick-off BOB and hand out the lists. If you would like to attend the assembly, you are welcome to. Students in grades 3rd-8th participate by reading the books from the list during the six weeks, then they have "battles" with comprehension questions. To answer the questions, students must recite the title and author of the book. Each question in the "battle" begins with "In which book...." When we get the list, I will e-mail it out to the class. Students are permitted to bring e-readers during BOB if they have on of the BOB books downloaded on their device. We will have one copy of each book in the classroom and they vary in level from 2nd grade to high school level. Students are encouraged to read as many as they can, but for my class I assign at least two for each student. The books can also be checked out at your local library. This is a fun way to get the students into reading! Student-Led Conferences: We have our conferences on January 31st and February 7th. Students will be leading the discussion about their portfolio, grades, MAP scores, and goals. If you haven't signed up yet or need to change your time, here is the link again! January Field Trip Our field trip in January will be with the Audubon Society exploring the Columbia Gorge and the fish hatchery. We still need at least one more chaperone to join us on this trip! We also need more chaperones for all the other trips! Please help us out by signing up here so that we can go on these amazing trips! Thank you:) Upcoming Events: BOB Assembly: Thursday, January 9th at 8am No School for MLK Day: January 20th Field Trip Friday: January 24th Native American Projects due (or test): January 30th All-School Assembly: January 30th Student-Led Conferences: January 31st and February 7th Staff vs Middle School Basketball Game: February 13th I can't believe it is already December! We have three weeks until our Winter Break, so we are going to make the most out of it!
Viking Test: Students have a test tomorrow on the Vikings. We highlighted the important information in our Core Knowledge notebooks today and students were instructed to take these notebooks home to study for 15 minutes tonight. Sad News: Our classroom pet, Leppy the leopard gecko, has gone to a better place. We are discussing getting a new class pet in January such as a bearded dragon. We have not decided yet. Chaperones Needed! We need more chaperones for our upcoming trips! Please sign up here. Our field trips locations are all set except for our February trip. I am in communication with a Weather station that might be able to take our class. They normally only take smaller groups, so we are working out the details. If you have questions about the chaperone training, please let me know. It takes about 10 minutes and can be done any day after school or the morning of the trip. Winter Conference Sign-up I will be sending out the winter conference sign-up next week. Winter conferences will take place on January 31st and February 7th. If you cannot make one of these dates, please let me know. Our winter conferences are student-led conferences, so please make sure it is a time your child can join. Thanks! Upcoming Events: All School Assembly: Thursday, December 19th Winter Break (No School) December 23rd-January 2nd Martin Luther King Jr. Day (No School) January 20th Field Trip Friday: January 24th Sock Hop: This Thursday is the Sock Hop! If you haven't sent in your pre-order form, please do so by tomorrow (November 6th)! Forms went home last week and Mrs. Adams also sent an e-mail in case you cannot find the form! If students pre-order, they get into the Sock Hop at 3:30 and they will have their snacks ready. Entrance is $1 and the money goes towards the 8th grade trip!
Conference Review: Thank you to everyone who came to conferences. It was great to meet in person. Some notes that came out of conferences that are helpful for all to know were: 1) Our Riggs sentences will now need to all be in cursive italics. I sent home a cursive italics guide in their red folders yesterday. 2) From now until the conferences in the winter, I will post your child's test scores on Class Dojo. This way, you can keep track of their progress on their goals. 3) I will be posting on this website the health standards for parents to see before we study Health (starting in January). Viking Feast! Our Viking Feast will take place on November 26th at 2:45. The sign-up genius for the Viking dishes to cook will be posted this Thursday. Students will need to help cook one dish at home and it can be brought in the morning (with heating instructions) or the afternoon before the feast! I am changing the format a bit so that students can share about the Viking Gods as well as the life of the Norse people in a presentation format. Computers During computer time, we have been using two different programs that can be practiced at home if students want extra practice. The first one is Typing Club (cascade3.typingclub.com) and students can practice their typing skills. The second one is eSpark (espark.app). In eSpark, students can practice reading and math skills. If your child would like to login to either one at home, please have them let me know and they can write their username and password in their planner. Upcoming Events: Sock Hop: Thursday November 7th at 3:30-4:30pm in the gym Veteran's Day: Monday, November 11th (No School) All School Assembly: Thursday, November 21st at 8am in the gym Viking Feast: Tuesday, November 26th at 2:45pm in the 3rd grade room. Thanksgiving Break: November 27th-28th Harvest Festival: The Harvest Festival is this Thursday from 5:30-7:00pm. Entry is free! Chili and cornbread are the only cost to the event. There will be fun games and facepainting! Family members are welcome to attend.
Conferences: Our Fall Conferences are October 25th and November 1st. If you would like to sign up or check your time, here is the sign-up. If you cannot make either of those days, we can schedule another day before or after school. I will be reaching out tomorrow to those families who have not signed up yet. Mad Tea Party: The third grade Mad Tea Party is Wednesday, October 30th at 2:45pm. All families are welcome to attend. Students will be participating in a reader's theater. Parts were handed out today. If your child is a Narrator, they can dress up like any character from Alice in Wonderland. If they are another part, they can dress up like that part. If they do not want to wear a costume during the party, they can wear their school uniform. If costume pieces are needed, we can make some in class or I can buy them with classroom funds. Please let me know if you need help with a costume! Typing: We have been working on typing during computer time in class. If your child would like to practice at home, the website is cascade3.typingclub.com. Their username and password are linked to their school gmail account. If your child does not remember their google sign-in, they can write it in their planner and bring it home! Photos: Our class photo album is located here. If you have taken any pictures from events such as Jogathon or the field trip, you can add photos to our shared drive. We have one student without permission, so I will check any time photos are shared to make sure that the student is not in the photo. Thank you for sharing pictures! Pictures can also be downloaded from here to keep! Field Trip shuffle: One of our potential field trips (Trackers Earth) finally got back to me and the trip will be too expensive. I had to shift a couple trips (May and January). so you will notice new trip names on the chaperone sign up. There is a possibility we can still visit Bull Run Watershed on another day, but they cannot confirm yet. This would give us a bonus field trip in May (and free!) I will let you all know as soon as I hear from them. We will not be having a bonus field trip in November, but the presenter is able to come to our school and teach us about the Vikings, which is still exciting! Thank you for your support on our field trips! Upcoming Events: Parent/Teacher Conferences: October 25th and November 1st Mad Tea Party: Wednesday, October 30th at 2:45pm (Costumes worn only during party) All School Assembly: Thursday, October 31st (No costumes worn) Sock Hop: Thursday November 7th at 4:30pm in the gym Veteran's Day: Monday, November 11th (No School) Hello third grade families,

Volunteering: I had so many people sign up to volunteer on Back to School Night. Thank you! For those who said they could help out anywhere, I will be sending out a sign-up genius next week with the exact needs. It is mostly Homework Check-in, Reading Groups, and Cleaning. There is a little filing of math papers as well. I will also need a volunteer to give a small group a spelling test twice a week. I will e-mail if you gave me a specific job you wanted to volunteer for so we can figure out dates! Usually my volunteers start the last week of September or the beginning of October! Thanks again for all the offers of help! Field Trip Chaperones: The next training for field trip chaperones is on Tuesday, September 17th. If you cannot make it to that, you can arrange to meet with Mrs. Adams or myself to go through the training. Our field trip on October 4th is all on-campus and I already have 2 helpers signed up. I will put out the sign-up genius for the remaining field trips on September 17th at the training and online. Thank you! Guest Speakers: I could use more guest speakers about Roman legacies. We will also play some of the queen's croquet! Harvest Festival: Our Harvest Festival this year will be on Thursday, October 17th from 5:30-7:00pm. Students will be putting on plays about the Viking Gods and will bring Viking inspired dishes for everyone to share! Thank you all for your support with the beginning of the school year! If you have specific concerns or questions, please e-mail me and we can find a time to meet. --Miss Devlin Thank you for everyone who was able to attend Back-to-School Night. Here is a review of what was presented that night for those who were unable to attend:
Homework Homework is an important part of learning, but should not take all night to complete. For third graders, Riggs homework should take no longer than 20 minutes and Math homework should take no longer than 30 minutes. Most days, they will start their Math in class. If your child is taking longer than that to complete assignments, please let me know via e-mail or in their planner. Projects and Events Core projects are a fun part of our learning! We will have presentations and events at which you are welcome to join us. I will also have challenge homework available for those students who would like to create something at home and bring it in. Upcoming Celebrations: October 30th at 2:45pm: Mad Tea Party November 26 at 2:45pm: Viking Feast Birthdays We celebrate birthdays in class by singing to the birthday kid and I give them a homework pass for that night. If you would like to bring in healthy snacks or gifts for the class, please let me know ahead of time and they will be handed out at our 2:00 recess time. Thanks! Communication Policy E-mail: E-mailing me is the best way to contact me. ([email protected]) I check my e-mail frequently and can often respond within 24 hours. I will send e-mails with student updates as well as notifications of new blog posts and updates on special events and field trips. Urgent Updates: I do check my e-mail throughout the day, but I cannot respond while teaching. If you have an urgent update after 1:00pm (Child needs to be picked up early/change to carline or side door) please call the office and they will let me know while I teach. You may also send a class Dojo message to me as these come up on my phone. Website & Blog: We have a class website (chpcsthird.weebly.com) where I will have blog posts and updates as well as links to the calendar, photos, lunch menu, sign-ups, and more. Please bookmark this website. I will update the blog every 3-4 weeks with what is going on in the classroom and upcoming events and activities. Class Dojo: I use Class Dojo mainly for behavior and picture sharing. If you are signed up, you can view your child’s points for the day. Positive and negative points will show up with a category (such as ‘Participation.’) Negative points are strictly for card flips. I will also send photos of your child to their ‘Portfolio.’ Messaging is additionally available on Class Dojo. I will send a few short messages on there as well. Planner: Students will write their homework assignments and reminders in their planner. Please go over your child’s planner each day and sign their planner. If you would like to write me a quick note in their planners that is fine. I will view their planners near the end of the day. Phone/In Person: I am happy to meet to talk about your child! Please e-mail me ahead of time so we can have a productive conversation. While I like connecting with parents in the morning as students arrive, I am too busy to have a full conversation during this time! Thank you for understanding. Math: Intermediate 4 Math will be taught in the 3rd grade classroom by Mrs. Pearson. If your child is in Intermediate 4, Mrs. Pearson can answer Math questions. Tests come home after every 5 lessons as well, so you will see progress. I am teaching Saxon Math 3 in the second grade room. Field Trip Dates: October 4th January 24th February 21st March 13th April 17th May 15th |
