Hello third grade families,
I hope you all had a fantastic Winter Break. We have less than one month until student-led conferences and we also have many other upcoming events and projects! Here's the latest: Math Teacher: As you have heard, I am now teaching Intermediate 4 Math (in the third grade room). Mrs. LeGrand is teaching Saxon Math 3 in her room, and our new 1st grade teacher, Mrs. Nickelby is teaching Saxon Math 2 in her room. This is to help with the transition of our new teacher and to aide in communication with parents. I taught Intermediate 4 the previous two years and can answer any questions either via e-mail, or during conferences. Native American Projects: Your child will be bringing home a packet today explaining their Native American projects, which are due on January 30th. If your child would prefer to take a test instead, that is also an option. There are a variety of project options. Please go over the handout with your child and make a decision by next Monday, January 13th. Your child can change their mind after that date, but please turn in the small portion on their packet that says return by the 13th. Battle of the Books: The Battle of the Books ("BOB") will begin next week and run for 6 weeks. We have an assembly this Thursday at 8am to Kick-off BOB and hand out the lists. If you would like to attend the assembly, you are welcome to. Students in grades 3rd-8th participate by reading the books from the list during the six weeks, then they have "battles" with comprehension questions. To answer the questions, students must recite the title and author of the book. Each question in the "battle" begins with "In which book...." When we get the list, I will e-mail it out to the class. Students are permitted to bring e-readers during BOB if they have on of the BOB books downloaded on their device. We will have one copy of each book in the classroom and they vary in level from 2nd grade to high school level. Students are encouraged to read as many as they can, but for my class I assign at least two for each student. The books can also be checked out at your local library. This is a fun way to get the students into reading! Student-Led Conferences: We have our conferences on January 31st and February 7th. Students will be leading the discussion about their portfolio, grades, MAP scores, and goals. If you haven't signed up yet or need to change your time, here is the link again! January Field Trip Our field trip in January will be with the Audubon Society exploring the Columbia Gorge and the fish hatchery. We still need at least one more chaperone to join us on this trip! We also need more chaperones for all the other trips! Please help us out by signing up here so that we can go on these amazing trips! Thank you:) Upcoming Events: BOB Assembly: Thursday, January 9th at 8am No School for MLK Day: January 20th Field Trip Friday: January 24th Native American Projects due (or test): January 30th All-School Assembly: January 30th Student-Led Conferences: January 31st and February 7th Staff vs Middle School Basketball Game: February 13th
