Hello Third grade families,
Happy Spring! The sun is shining and the students are ready for a break! I hope your first day of Spring has gone well. Here are some updates for our class: PTA Dance and Fundraiser: The PTA Dance and raffle will be on Saturday, April 6th from 4-6pm. There will be a DJ and light refreshments, as well as raffle prizes and the class basket silent auction. Admission is $2. Additional raffle tickets are $2. We need help for donations to our class basket! Our theme is "Weekend Getaway." Please bring in your item by Monday, April 1st. Intent to Return forms: These forms went home today with your child. Please make sure to sign the form and bring it back to the office! Core Knowledge: Our last day for the Thirteen colonies unit will be tomorrow. Students have their study guides to study tonight for the test tomorrow. Our next unit is Animal Classification and Endangered Species. Students will be creating a research project and presenting on April 19th at 2:45pm. Families are welcome to join us. Students will be creating Google Slides presentations with a partner. Research will be done at school and students are welcome to also work on their presentations at home. More information will go home after Spring break! Spring Break homework: There will be no extra spring break homework packet. I will be sending home your child's latest Math test, which will need to be corrected. I will attach "reteaches" for the missed problems which they will need to complete. Please look over your child's math test with them. If you child received below a 15/20, they may be falling behind, and could need extra help at home to catch up. Our Math class is the first one with a final test at the end of the year. I want to make sure every student can move on to Intermediate 5 next year, so if your child is falling behind, please work with them on the problems that they missed. The hardest part of the year for Saxon is over, and now we will go back and study those concepts again to solidify them. Spring Concert: The spring Music concert is on Thursday, April 11th. There is a matinee performance at 2:00pm. For the evening performance, students will need to arrive at 5:30 and will perform starting at 5:45pm. We look forward to seeing you there! Field Trip Photos: Photos from our latest field trip to the Dibble House in Molalla and the Aurora Colony museum are uploaded onto our class Google photo page. Students were able to make their own colonial toys, grind corn, churn butter, try out some needle-work, and much more! When we arrived back at school, we played colonial games. Our next field trip is to SCRAP on April 19th. Hello Families!
We have officially entered March! Here are some updates and happenings for the month as well as upcoming events to look forward to! Battle of the Books: We have competed in 2 BOB battles so far (4th grade and 5th grade) and have a total of 77 points! Students have done an amazing job in their first ever BOB battles! We did lose both, but we are confident we can still win at least one battle! There are three more left (6th, 7th, and 8th) this next week! Science Test: Because of the snow day, the Science test on the Ear and Hearing has been moved to Monday. For homework this weekend, students have been assigned to study for the test using the notes they took in class. If you child forgot their Core Knowledge notebook at school, here is a quick study guide: 1) Identify parts of the ear (pinna, ear canal, ear drum, hammer, anvil, stirrup, cochlea, auditory nerve) 2) Describe the difference between low intensity sounds (quiet) and high intensity sounds (loud) 3) Describe the difference between high pitch and low pitch 4) Explain how sound waves go from outside of the ear to send messages to the brain 5) Describe who Alexander Graham Bell was. (He invented the telephone) New Core Knowledge Unit: On Monday we will start our new Core Knowledge History unit on the Thirteen Colonies. This will be our last History unit of the year. We will be practicing our thirteen colonies song for the showcase. Core Knowledge Showcase: On Thursday, March 7th we have our Core Knowledge Showcase! Each class will perform twice, once in the cafeteria, and once in the gym. Doors open at 6:10 and students can head down to their classrooms to prepare. The show will begin at 6:30 and most likely finish around 8pm. For third grade, please have your child come in uniform. If they have a red sweater, it would be good to bring that as well since we will be walking outside to the gym without coats (quickly). Also, a reminder to wait until every class is finished to come pick up your child from the classroom. Students will not be released early after our own performance. We are excited to present our song and poem! March Field Trip: On Friday, March 15th, third grade will be visiting the Dibble House Museum in Molalla and the Aurora Colony museum in Aurora to learn more about colonial life in America. This will be an all-day field trip and it is a full school day, so please make sure your child attends the whole day. Thank you! Health Standards: Starting in March, third grade will be having Health class once every other week to address the third grade Health standards. Topics include: Prevention and Control of Disease (supporting personal health practices), Promotion of Mental, Social, and Emotional Health (Communication skills, emotions, personal stressors), Violence and Suicide Prevention (bullying, hurtful media messages, prevent unsafe situations), and Promotion of Sexual Health (appropriate touch vs. inappropriate touch, how to say no and leave unsafe situations). I wanted to let you all know ahead of time as these topics may start conversations at home as well. If you have any questions, you can e-mail me, Mrs. Macy, and/or Mrs. Adams. Smarter Balanced Dates: We now officially have the dates for the Smarter Balanced State testing (May 13th-23rd), so please make sure your child is present on those days. When I know the exact days of testing in that two week period, I will let you know. Upcoming Events: Core Knowledge Showcase: Thursday, March 7th at 6:30pm (doors at 6:10) Pi Day (Celebrate Math at school!) March 13th Field Trip Friday: March 15th Spring Vacation: March 25th-29th PTA Parent-Child Dance and Fundraiser: Saturday, April 6th Spring Music Concert (K-8): Thursday, April 11th |
