Hello third grade families,
Thank you all so much for your support with the Viking Feast last week! The students worked so hard on their reader's theater plays, Viking ship, and Viking dishes! I only got a couple videos, if anyone has more photos or videos to share, that would be great! Now we only have one more week of school before Winter Break! Here are some updates and events to be aware of: Portfolios: If your child still has their portfolio at home, please have them bring it on Monday or Tuesday. I will be sending them home next week with all the latest tests to look over and sign over the break. Thank you! Winter Break Homework: The homework over the break will be normal Riggs and Math plus a cursive italic handwriting practice and an assignment to write a letter using cursive italics as well as reading. Monday substitute: I will be gone on Monday and our substitute will be Mr. Crane. The students are familiar with him from last year. I will be back on Tuesday. Core Knowledge: Our Core Unit for these two weeks is European Explorers. We have been comparing and contrasting Christopher Columbus, Ponce de Leon, Hernando De Soto, and Francisco Vasquez de Coronado. Next week we will also discuss modern Canada. Field Trip Friday: On Friday, January 11th, we will be venturing down to Salem with 4th grade to visit the Willamette Heritage Center. We need one more chaperone to join us on this trip! If you can join, please sign up here. Thank you! Battle of the Books: Third grade through 8th grade will be participating in Battle of the Books. Starting on January 7th, we will have a list of books to read as well as copies of each book. Students will be bringing these books home to work on as well as reading them at school. When the battles begin, students will be quizzed on comprehension questions against another class. All of the answers are the title and author of the books, so we will work on memorizing those as well. It's a fun challenge to participate in! Upcoming Events: All School Assembly: Thursday, December 20th at 8am Winter Break: December 21-January 6th Return to School: January 7th Battle of the Books begins: January 7th (Assembly) Field Trip Friday: January 11th Have a great weekend, Miss Devlin
