Hello third grade families! I hope this winter is going well for you! Students did a wonderful job on their Native American History projects! I am adding those pictures in soon. Here are the updates for the month of February:
Conferences: Thank you to those families who came to their student-led conferences on Friday! This Friday and next Friday we have many more conferences coming up! We will be discussing your child's portfolio, grades, and MAP scores. If you would like to check your time or change your time, the sign-up is here: link. Valentine's Day: If your child would like to bring valentines for the class, they are more than welcome to. Here are some reminders about valentines at our school:
New Core Unit and Field Trip: Our new Core Knowledge unit for the month of February is Light & Vision, Sound and Hearing. We will have two tests, one on Light & Vision and one on Sound & Hearing. Our field trip this month is to Tryon Creek on Friday, February 22nd. If you need to check your chaperone sign up, here it is again! Math: This is the point in the Saxon Math curriculum where Math gets much more difficult. There is a little review, but many new concepts are introduced, and it can be hard to keep up. As we talk at conferences about interventions to make sure your child stays with the class, another great way to help them is to go over their homework after they are finished. We check homework in class, so perhaps on the weekends or when you can find time, you could help them correct their missed problems. Battle of the Books: BOB battles will begin on February 25th. To help your child with this at home, you could talk with them about the books they are reading for the battles, ask them questions about the books, download audiobooks (some are available free from the library), quiz them on the title and author of the book, and encourage reading at home. This is a fun way to help encourage students to read other genres of books, try things out, and read read read! Mark your calendars! On March 7th at 6:00pm we will have the Core Knowledge Showcase. We haven't had a showcase for a couple years, so we decided to bring it back this year! Each grade will perform in front of the whole school as well as parents and families. We would love for you all to join! On June 1st, we will have the Third Grade Astronomy camp-out at Milo McIver Park in the Kingfisher Group tent site. This is a fun event, already paid for, and if you don't want to camp that night, it is totally optional to spend the night! We will have astronomers bringing powerful telescopes to see constellations, planets, and even other galaxies in the sky that night! Our dinner will be a potluck BBQ, and we will coordinate this when the time gets closer. Don't forget to mark your calendars! Upcoming Events: Chinese New Year Assembly (rescheduled) Thursday February 7th at 10:00am Parent-Teacher Conferences: Friday February 8th, and 15th President's Day (No School): Monday, February 18th Field Trip Friday: February 22nd All School Assembly: February 28th at 8:00am Core Knowledge Showcase: March 7th at 6:00pm Field Trip Friday: March 15th
