Hello Third Grade Families, I am so excited to teach your children this year! I know it will be a wonderful year of learning and fun. Here are some upcoming events and details before the year starts: 1. Open House/Supply Drop-Off: If you would like to visit our classroom before school begins, please stop by on Tuesday, September 3rd from 8:30-9:30am or 2-3pm in the third grade room. If you already have your school supplies and would like to drop them off early, you are welcome to bring them during this time. It would be great to see you before school starts! 2. First Day of School: Our first day of school is Wednesday, September 4th. Doors open to our classroom at 7:45 a.m. each morning. Students should arrive in our classroom at least 5 minutes early each morning to prepare for our school day which begins promptly at 8:00 a.m. and ends at 3:30 p.m. I will greet students at the door. If you would like to meet with me, please e-mail me and I will be more than happy to set up a conference. It would be best if I could focus on greeting students at the beginning of the day. If you are late, please check in with the office and let them know if your child is getting the school lunch. 3. School Uniforms: Students are expected to be in full uniform for their first day of school. Our uniform has been changed the last two years to include more colorful socks, shoes, nails, and hair. If any of these become a distraction in the classroom, the students will be asked to no longer wear that item. (For example, no light-up shoes, please!) If you would like to look through the uniform closet before school starts, please let me know. 4. Fidgets: Please do not send your children with fidget spinners. They have become more of a toy than a tool for learning. I have a box of other quiet fidgets available. If your child has a quiet fidget they would like to bring from home, we can try it out, but if it becomes a distraction, it will need to be put away. 5. Healthy Snacks and Lunch: Our healthy snack policy is one reason many families love Cascade Heights! A fresh (non-glass) bottle of water and snacks like pretzels, whole wheat crackers, low sugar, low fat yogurt, fresh vegetables, or fruit will help minds and bodies work their best. We also strive to be "zero-waste" which means we do not impact the environment by throwing away packaging each day. A cloth sandwich wrapper rather than a Ziploc bag, a permanent water bottle that can be washed each day rather than disposable water bottles. We study the importance of protecting our earth and we want to practice what we teach. Our school has a "pack it in, pack it out" policy, where every student brings home what they did not eat in their lunch. In third grade, we have a morning snack, lunch, and then an option for an afternoon snack during recess. Please pack accordingly; we work and play hard and need lots of nutritious food! If you are in need of reusable Tupperware or sandwich containers, please let me know. 6. Back To School Night: Mark your calendars! Back to School Night is Thursday, September 5th from 6:30-7:30 PM. This event is an important time to come and learn about the classroom procedures, rules, policies, and general schedule. I will also have a conference sign-up, field trip chaperone sign-up and instructions for signing up for Class Dojo. 7. Supply List I am sure most of you have seen the supply list, but here it is again just in case! If you cannot purchase all these items, please prioritize the individual items and make sure that your child's name is on them. If you happen to be out shopping in the next few weeks and want to purchase more for us, we have a few wishlist items for our classroom as well. These are -Individual watercolor paint sets (10 needed) -Air-dry clay -Tempura paint (various colors) -Paintbrushes -Shaving cream (for Riggs) -Large construction paper Thank you!!! --Miss Devlin

Hello families!
The end of the school year is near! We only have six weeks left! Here are some announcements and updates for the rest of the school year: Stargazing Campout: Our campout will take place on Saturday, June 1st. If you joined with me last year or with Mrs. Gausman in the past, it will be the same set-up. If this is your first time joining, here is the deal: This is a family event where siblings are welcome and camping is optional. If you cannot stay overnight, you are still more than welcome to join for dinner and stargazing. This is not a field trip, so families are in charge of watching their own children, or carpooling and sharing the responsibility. We will be at the Kingfisher Camp site at Milo McIver park. Our reservation starts at 4pm, so you can arrive any time between 4pm and 6:00pm to set up tents and the children can play in the field. Our potluck dinner will be at 6:30, so please arrive by 6:00 in order to help set up and bring your food to the table (potluck sign-up coming soon.) We will have some downtime before dusk (+~8:50), when we will head up to the upper field with astronomers from the Rose City Astronomers. After the stargazing, you are free to leave or camp at the campsite. We have the reservation just for Saturday night. I will send an e-mail next week with the potluck sign-up. I think it should be another fun campout! I will also be sending home a form next week to be filled out and returned. Thank you for your support! Field Trips: Our pictures from the SCRAP field trip and Endangered Species Showcase are now on Google Photos here. Our last field trip of the year is on May 17th and we will be going to the Bull Run Watershed. We have a permission form that needs to be signed for this field trip, and I will send that home this Thursday. Smarter Balanced Testing: Our state testing begins on May 13th and will continue until May 16th. Students will be testing in Reading and Math. It helps the whole class if everyone is present and on time for these tests. If you have questions about the opt-out form, please let me know. Upcoming Events: Thursday April 25th: All School Assembly (8am) Thursday, May 9th: Night of the Notables (for Middle School and 4th grade, but fun and informative:) Monday, May 13th: State testing (Smarter Balanced) begins Friday, May 17th: Field Trip Friday (Bull Run, last field trip!) Thursday, May 30th: All School Assembly (8am) Saturday, June 1st: Third Grade Astronomy Campout (arrive any time after 4pm, dinner at 6:30) Monday, June 3rd: Diffendoofer Day/Field Day Tuesday, June 4th: Last Day of school (Half day) Hello Third grade families,
Happy Spring! The sun is shining and the students are ready for a break! I hope your first day of Spring has gone well. Here are some updates for our class: PTA Dance and Fundraiser: The PTA Dance and raffle will be on Saturday, April 6th from 4-6pm. There will be a DJ and light refreshments, as well as raffle prizes and the class basket silent auction. Admission is $2. Additional raffle tickets are $2. We need help for donations to our class basket! Our theme is "Weekend Getaway." Please bring in your item by Monday, April 1st. Intent to Return forms: These forms went home today with your child. Please make sure to sign the form and bring it back to the office! Core Knowledge: Our last day for the Thirteen colonies unit will be tomorrow. Students have their study guides to study tonight for the test tomorrow. Our next unit is Animal Classification and Endangered Species. Students will be creating a research project and presenting on April 19th at 2:45pm. Families are welcome to join us. Students will be creating Google Slides presentations with a partner. Research will be done at school and students are welcome to also work on their presentations at home. More information will go home after Spring break! Spring Break homework: There will be no extra spring break homework packet. I will be sending home your child's latest Math test, which will need to be corrected. I will attach "reteaches" for the missed problems which they will need to complete. Please look over your child's math test with them. If you child received below a 15/20, they may be falling behind, and could need extra help at home to catch up. Our Math class is the first one with a final test at the end of the year. I want to make sure every student can move on to Intermediate 5 next year, so if your child is falling behind, please work with them on the problems that they missed. The hardest part of the year for Saxon is over, and now we will go back and study those concepts again to solidify them. Spring Concert: The spring Music concert is on Thursday, April 11th. There is a matinee performance at 2:00pm. For the evening performance, students will need to arrive at 5:30 and will perform starting at 5:45pm. We look forward to seeing you there! Field Trip Photos: Photos from our latest field trip to the Dibble House in Molalla and the Aurora Colony museum are uploaded onto our class Google photo page. Students were able to make their own colonial toys, grind corn, churn butter, try out some needle-work, and much more! When we arrived back at school, we played colonial games. Our next field trip is to SCRAP on April 19th. We have officially entered March! Here are some updates and happenings for the month as well as upcoming events to look forward to! Battle of the Books: We have competed in 2 BOB battles so far (4th grade and 5th grade) and have a total of 77 points! Students have done an amazing job in their first ever BOB battles! We did lose both, but we are confident we can still win at least one battle! There are three more left (6th, 7th, and 8th) this next week! Science Test: Because of the snow day, the Science test on the Ear and Hearing has been moved to Monday. For homework this weekend, students have been assigned to study for the test using the notes they took in class. If you child forgot their Core Knowledge notebook at school, here is a quick study guide: 1) Identify parts of the ear (pinna, ear canal, ear drum, hammer, anvil, stirrup, cochlea, auditory nerve) 2) Describe the difference between low intensity sounds (quiet) and high intensity sounds (loud) 3) Describe the difference between high pitch and low pitch 4) Explain how sound waves go from outside of the ear to send messages to the brain 5) Describe who Alexander Graham Bell was. (He invented the telephone) New Core Knowledge Unit: On Monday we will start our new Core Knowledge History unit on the Thirteen Colonies. This will be our last History unit of the year. We will be practicing our thirteen colonies song for the showcase. Core Knowledge Showcase: On Thursday, March 7th we have our Core Knowledge Showcase! Each class will perform twice, once in the cafeteria, and once in the gym. Doors open at 6:10 and students can head down to their classrooms to prepare. The show will begin at 6:30 and most likely finish around 8pm. For third grade, please have your child come in uniform. If they have a red sweater, it would be good to bring that as well since we will be walking outside to the gym without coats (quickly). Also, a reminder to wait until every class is finished to come pick up your child from the classroom. Students will not be released early after our own performance. We are excited to present our song and poem! March Field Trip: On Friday, March 15th, third grade will be visiting the Dibble House Museum in Molalla and the Aurora Colony museum in Aurora to learn more about colonial life in America. This will be an all-day field trip and it is a full school day, so please make sure your child attends the whole day. Thank you! Health Standards: Starting in March, third grade will be having Health class once every other week to address the third grade Health standards. Topics include: Prevention and Control of Disease (supporting personal health practices), Promotion of Mental, Social, and Emotional Health (Communication skills, emotions, personal stressors), Violence and Suicide Prevention (bullying, hurtful media messages, prevent unsafe situations), and Promotion of Sexual Health (appropriate touch vs. inappropriate touch, how to say no and leave unsafe situations). I wanted to let you all know ahead of time as these topics may start conversations at home as well. If you have any questions, you can e-mail me, Mrs. Macy, and/or Mrs. Adams. Smarter Balanced Dates: We now officially have the dates for the Smarter Balanced State testing (May 13th-23rd), so please make sure your child is present on those days. When I know the exact days of testing in that two week period, I will let you know. Upcoming Events: Core Knowledge Showcase: Thursday, March 7th at 6:30pm (doors at 6:10) Pi Day (Celebrate Math at school!) March 13th Field Trip Friday: March 15th Spring Vacation: March 25th-29th PTA Parent-Child Dance and Fundraiser: Saturday, April 6th Spring Music Concert (K-8): Thursday, April 11th Hello third grade families! I hope this winter is going well for you! Students did a wonderful job on their Native American History projects! I am adding those pictures in soon. Here are the updates for the month of February:
Conferences: Thank you to those families who came to their student-led conferences on Friday! This Friday and next Friday we have many more conferences coming up! We will be discussing your child's portfolio, grades, and MAP scores. If you would like to check your time or change your time, the sign-up is here: link. Valentine's Day: If your child would like to bring valentines for the class, they are more than welcome to. Here are some reminders about valentines at our school:
New Core Unit and Field Trip: Our new Core Knowledge unit for the month of February is Light & Vision, Sound and Hearing. We will have two tests, one on Light & Vision and one on Sound & Hearing. Our field trip this month is to Tryon Creek on Friday, February 22nd. If you need to check your chaperone sign up, here it is again! Math: This is the point in the Saxon Math curriculum where Math gets much more difficult. There is a little review, but many new concepts are introduced, and it can be hard to keep up. As we talk at conferences about interventions to make sure your child stays with the class, another great way to help them is to go over their homework after they are finished. We check homework in class, so perhaps on the weekends or when you can find time, you could help them correct their missed problems. Battle of the Books: BOB battles will begin on February 25th. To help your child with this at home, you could talk with them about the books they are reading for the battles, ask them questions about the books, download audiobooks (some are available free from the library), quiz them on the title and author of the book, and encourage reading at home. This is a fun way to help encourage students to read other genres of books, try things out, and read read read! Mark your calendars! On March 7th at 6:00pm we will have the Core Knowledge Showcase. We haven't had a showcase for a couple years, so we decided to bring it back this year! Each grade will perform in front of the whole school as well as parents and families. We would love for you all to join! On June 1st, we will have the Third Grade Astronomy camp-out at Milo McIver Park in the Kingfisher Group tent site. This is a fun event, already paid for, and if you don't want to camp that night, it is totally optional to spend the night! We will have astronomers bringing powerful telescopes to see constellations, planets, and even other galaxies in the sky that night! Our dinner will be a potluck BBQ, and we will coordinate this when the time gets closer. Don't forget to mark your calendars! Upcoming Events: Chinese New Year Assembly (rescheduled) Thursday February 7th at 10:00am Parent-Teacher Conferences: Friday February 8th, and 15th President's Day (No School): Monday, February 18th Field Trip Friday: February 22nd All School Assembly: February 28th at 8:00am Core Knowledge Showcase: March 7th at 6:00pm Field Trip Friday: March 15th Good afternoon families,
Welcome back to school and Happy New Year! Here are some updates for January in third grade! Field Trip this Friday: We have our field trip this Friday to the Willamette Heritage Center in Salem. We will be traveling to the museum with the fourth grade class, but taking part in separate activities once there. Your child needs to bring a lunch, snack, jacket, water bottle, something to read or do on the bus (ex: Mad libs, drawing, etc.) In order to hold all these things, it is helpful if they bring a backpack. This way, less things will be left on the bus. Please send your child in uniform or a field trip T-shirt with uniform pants/bottoms and shoes. Thank you! Winter Conferences: Our conferences this winter will be on February 1st, 8th, and 15th and will be Student-Led Conferences. Here are the sign-ups. We will go over your child's portfolio, their MAP scores, grades, struggles, and goals. Your child will be given support at school to know what to say in their conference. These conferences are optional, but encouraged. Volunteering: I could use one more chaperone for our February field trip to Tryon Creek on February 22nd. The sign-up is here. I could also use help vacuuming the classroom. The sign up is here. Thank you so much to all volunteers!! Native American Unit Project: Your child is bringing home an orange packet today about their Native American unit project due January 31st. They have a choice of doing two smaller projects, one big project, or taking a test on the 31st instead of the project. These projects are at-home projects, but students can also work on them at school during work time, computer time and library time. If you need materials, please let me know and I may already have them! Please fill out your child's choice and return it to me by next Monday. Thank you! Battle of the Books: Our Battle of the Books start date has been pushed back due to delivery time of the books. We should be able to release the book list at the end of next week. One copy of each book will be available at school, but children can also check the books out of their public library, rent them as an e-book, listen to them on audiobook, and more. Each student is asked to read at least 2 of the books, but the more the better! The whole class will be quizzed on comprehension questions during the battles. I will send updates when we have the book list! Pictures: I've updated our class Google Pictures album with pictures from this week of the students working on their Beringia land bridges. If you have any other pictures from the school year of students, please upload them any time to our album. Especially after events and field trips! Thank you, Miss Devlin Upcoming Events: Field Trip Friday: Friday, January 11th Martin Luther King Jr Day (No School) January 21st Staff vs Middle School Basketball Game: January 24th 6:00-7:00pm All School Assembly: January 31st at 8:00am Native American Unit Projects Due: January 31st Parent-Teacher Conferences: Friday February 1st, 8th, and 15th Hello third grade families,
Thank you all so much for your support with the Viking Feast last week! The students worked so hard on their reader's theater plays, Viking ship, and Viking dishes! I only got a couple videos, if anyone has more photos or videos to share, that would be great! Now we only have one more week of school before Winter Break! Here are some updates and events to be aware of: Portfolios: If your child still has their portfolio at home, please have them bring it on Monday or Tuesday. I will be sending them home next week with all the latest tests to look over and sign over the break. Thank you! Winter Break Homework: The homework over the break will be normal Riggs and Math plus a cursive italic handwriting practice and an assignment to write a letter using cursive italics as well as reading. Monday substitute: I will be gone on Monday and our substitute will be Mr. Crane. The students are familiar with him from last year. I will be back on Tuesday. Core Knowledge: Our Core Unit for these two weeks is European Explorers. We have been comparing and contrasting Christopher Columbus, Ponce de Leon, Hernando De Soto, and Francisco Vasquez de Coronado. Next week we will also discuss modern Canada. Field Trip Friday: On Friday, January 11th, we will be venturing down to Salem with 4th grade to visit the Willamette Heritage Center. We need one more chaperone to join us on this trip! If you can join, please sign up here. Thank you! Battle of the Books: Third grade through 8th grade will be participating in Battle of the Books. Starting on January 7th, we will have a list of books to read as well as copies of each book. Students will be bringing these books home to work on as well as reading them at school. When the battles begin, students will be quizzed on comprehension questions against another class. All of the answers are the title and author of the books, so we will work on memorizing those as well. It's a fun challenge to participate in! I recorded them singing the Name Those Bones song in their t-shirts and will share on our Google Photos as well as in an e-mail when I have it uploaded! Core Knowledge quiz: We have a quiz on the skeletal system tomorrow during Core Knowledge. Please have your child study for 20 minutes tonight. Here is a picture of the bones that we memorized. Students are expected to remember 11 of these, all of which are in the song. ( safeyoutube.net/w/mhbf ) Sock Hop: The Sock Hop is tomorrow! Students with pre-order forms will be going straight to the gym after school and you can meet them there. The dances go in order from K-8th grade, so your child will be dancing 4th. The Sock Hop ends at 4:30. Conference Follow up: During conferences, I mentioned posting comprehension questions for you to ask your child while they read at home. I will be posting these on the website as well as "dress-ups" lists to help with Riggs homework. These should be up by tomorrow on the website. Reminders about Halloween: Please make sure your child is in full uniform (no costumes) and does not bring candy in their lunch box. We are collecting candy for the veterans again this year. First Core Knowledge quiz: On Monday, we will have a quiz on the muscular system. I encouraged students to bring their notes home to study. It will be a short quiz, just identifying the skeletal muscles names and telling the difference between voluntary and involuntary muscles. If your child forgot their notebook, or is still improving their note-taking skills, here are the names we made studied: (Trapezius and Pectorals will not be on the quiz, but I mentioned them in class, so they are not crossed out!) OMSI Makers Faire: This weekend OMSI is having a Makers Faire! Mrs. Pridey will be taking part and invites you all to join. Mrs. Pridey will be there Sunday from 1-5:30 molding keychain hats and coins. It does cost the regular OMSI entrance fee, plus a few other fees if you want to take part in big projects. If you are interested, here is the link! Lice and Sickness: Unfortunately, there has been lice reported in our school. I have not heard of any cases in our classroom, but if you suspect your child has lice, please check their heads or have them checked. We will not be doing whole-school or whole-class checks, but lice checks will be available in the office on a case-by-case basis. Also, I had several students tell me on Thursday that they had a sore throat! I hope sickness is not already spreading, but if your child is sick, please let me know and we will send make-up work home when they return. Thanks! Field Trip: For our field trip on October 5th, please send your child with a snack, lunch, water bottle, and in full uniform, with a coat. We will have astronomers bringing powerful telescopes to see constellations, planets, and even other galaxies in the sky that night! Our dinner will be a potluck BBQ, which is always fun, plus s'mores. Almost our entire class came last year, I hope we keep this tradition alive! It's a great way to end the school year! I hope you and your family can make it! |
