Only 6 more weeks! Or 24 days left...but who's counting? ;) Here are a few updates and things to be aware of before the school year is up!
Smarter Balanced Testing: We will take the state tests starting on May 7th and continuing through May 10th. It helps the whole class if everyone is present and on time for these tests. The opt-out form was sent by Mrs. Macy to the whole school via e-mail yesterday. If you have any questions about state testing, please let me know.
MAP results and Portfolios: We ended up taking the MAP tests at an in-between time between Winter and Spring, so they came back with incorrect calculations on the students' percentages. I have recalculated these and will be sending them home with students' portfolios on Monday. Students will also receive their grades for their Animal Research on Monday. This will be a good time to check in with your child about supports they may need during the last month of school and perhaps over the summer as well.
Last Field Trip Friday: Our last field trip is a canoe trip up the Willamette River together in a Native American replica canoe on May 18th. Students will be able to help paddle past locations that "transport them back in time as they slide past old Indian village locations and settler town sites." The National Historic site at Willamette Falls Locks helps bring perspective to development near the end of the Oregon Trail. Students get personal experience in understanding river ecology by doing on-shore experiments and activities. This trip connects to our Native American unit as well as our Rivers and Ecology Core Knowledge unit. Please make sure your child is present as this is a special learning experience for the whole class.
Stargazing Campout: Our campout will take place on Saturday, June 2nd. If you joined with Mrs. Gausman in the past, it will be the same set-up. If this is your first time joining, here is the deal. This is a family event where siblings are welcome and camping is optional. If you cannot stay overnight, you are still more than welcome to join for dinner and stargazing. This is not a field trip, so families are in charge of watching their own children, or carpooling and sharing the responsibility.
We will be at the Kingfisher Camp site at Milo McIver park. Our reservation starts at 4pm, so you can arrive any time between 4pm and 6:00pm to set up tents and the children can play in the field. Our potluck dinner will be at 6:30, so please arrive by 6:00 in order to help set up and bring your food to the table (potluck sign-up coming soon.) We will have some downtime before dusk (+~8:50), when we will head up to the upper field with astronomers from the Rose City Astronomers. After the stargazing, you are free to leave or camp at the campsite. We have the reservation just for Saturday night.
I will send an e-mail closer to the date with sign-ups. I think it should be another fun campout! Thank you for your support!
