Hello third grade families,

Here are those sign-ups again: Field Trip Chaperone Volunteering Fall Conferences: I now have the Fall conference sign-up live as well. Please sign up for a conference with me to discuss your child for 25 minutes. Our two conference days are October 25th and November 1st. We made it through Thursday on our first full week back! Here are some updates from our classroom and reminders about upcoming events!
Volunteering: I had so many people sign up to volunteer on Back to School Night. Thank you! For those who said they could help out anywhere, I will be sending out a sign-up genius next week with the exact needs. It is mostly Homework Check-in, Reading Groups, and Cleaning. There is a little filing of math papers as well. I will also need a volunteer to give a small group a spelling test twice a week. I will e-mail if you gave me a specific job you wanted to volunteer for so we can figure out dates! Usually my volunteers start the last week of September or the beginning of October! Thanks again for all the offers of help! Field Trip Chaperones: The next training for field trip chaperones is on Tuesday, September 17th. If you cannot make it to that, you can arrange to meet with Mrs. Adams or myself to go through the training. Our field trip on October 4th is all on-campus and I already have 2 helpers signed up. I will put out the sign-up genius for the remaining field trips on September 17th at the training and online. Thank you! Guest Speakers: I could use more guest speakers about Roman legacies. Do you or someone you know have knowledge or work in the following categories? If so, please let me know!
Picture Day: Picture Day for third graders is Tuesday, September 17th. We will have the Picture Make-up day on Tuesday, October 1st. Jog-a-thon: Jog-a-thon is coming up quickly! On Thursday, September 26th during the school day we have our regular PTA Jogathon to raise money for classroom stipends. A new event this year is the "Parent Jog-a-thon" on the 26th at 5pm! Try to beat your child's number of laps! Please return Jog-a-thon pledge sheets by Monday, September 23rd. If you would like to volunteer for the Jog-a-thon, click here. Mad Tea Party: Third graders will be reading Alice in Wonderland in class as one of their Core Knowledge literature books. On October 30th at 2:45 in the cafeteria, we will have our Mad Tea Party! Students will have guidelines as to what costumes they can wear and they will put on a reader's theater for families to enjoy! Tea and treats will be served! We will also play some of the queen's croquet! Harvest Festival: Our Harvest Festival this year will be on Thursday, October 17th from 5:30-7:00pm. This is a fun, community-building event where teachers run booths and games for children to participate in. All families are invited! Save the date for the Viking Feast: Our Viking Feast will be Tuesday, November 26th at 2:45pm. Students will be putting on plays about the Viking Gods and will bring Viking inspired dishes for everyone to share! Thank you all for your support with the beginning of the school year! If you have specific concerns or questions, please e-mail me and we can find a time to meet. --Miss Devlin Thank you for everyone who was able to attend Back-to-School Night. Here is a review of what was presented that night for those who were unable to attend:
Homework Homework is an important part of learning, but should not take all night to complete. For third graders, Riggs homework should take no longer than 20 minutes and Math homework should take no longer than 30 minutes. Most days, they will start their Math in class. If your child is taking longer than that to complete assignments, please let me know via e-mail or in their planner. Projects and Events Core projects are a fun part of our learning! We will have presentations and events at which you are welcome to join us. I will also have challenge homework available for those students who would like to create something at home and bring it in. Upcoming Celebrations: October 30th at 2:45pm: Mad Tea Party November 26 at 2:45pm: Viking Feast Birthdays We celebrate birthdays in class by singing to the birthday kid and I give them a homework pass for that night. If you would like to bring in healthy snacks or gifts for the class, please let me know ahead of time and they will be handed out at our 2:00 recess time. Thanks! Communication Policy E-mail: E-mailing me is the best way to contact me. ([email protected]) I check my e-mail frequently and can often respond within 24 hours. I will send e-mails with student updates as well as notifications of new blog posts and updates on special events and field trips. Urgent Updates: I do check my e-mail throughout the day, but I cannot respond while teaching. If you have an urgent update after 1:00pm (Child needs to be picked up early/change to carline or side door) please call the office and they will let me know while I teach. You may also send a class Dojo message to me as these come up on my phone. Website & Blog: We have a class website (chpcsthird.weebly.com) where I will have blog posts and updates as well as links to the calendar, photos, lunch menu, sign-ups, and more. Please bookmark this website. I will update the blog every 3-4 weeks with what is going on in the classroom and upcoming events and activities. Class Dojo: I use Class Dojo mainly for behavior and picture sharing. If you are signed up, you can view your child’s points for the day. Positive and negative points will show up with a category (such as ‘Participation.’) Negative points are strictly for card flips. I will also send photos of your child to their ‘Portfolio.’ Messaging is additionally available on Class Dojo. I will send a few short messages on there as well. Planner: Students will write their homework assignments and reminders in their planner. Please go over your child’s planner each day and sign their planner. If you would like to write me a quick note in their planners that is fine. I will view their planners near the end of the day. Phone/In Person: I am happy to meet to talk about your child! Please e-mail me ahead of time so we can have a productive conversation. While I like connecting with parents in the morning as students arrive, I am too busy to have a full conversation during this time! Thank you for understanding. Math: Intermediate 4 Math will be taught in the 3rd grade classroom by Mrs. Pearson. If your child is in Intermediate 4, Mrs. Pearson can answer Math questions. Tests come home after every 5 lessons as well, so you will see progress. I am teaching Saxon Math 3 in the second grade room. Field Trip Dates: October 4th January 24th February 21st March 13th April 17th May 15th |
